Most people who reach Tulcea are just passing through or stay only one night, two at most. They come for the Danube Delta, see it in a day, then head home.
The truth is that when you make the effort to slow down, the real experience begins. Today’s Tulcea is no longer just a logistical stop to check off. Tulcea is redefining itself as a tourist destination, becoming the city where you can gradually ease into the slow flow of the Danube and the Delta.
That’s why a long weekend in Tulcea isn’t a luxury. It’s the real difference between a rushed visit and an authentic experience. And since we know time has become an issue for all of us, we’ve put together a concrete plan to help you spend an extended weekend in Tulcea.
IMPORTANT – This themed program is designed especially for experienced explorers, those who are used to visiting various tourist attractions. To make things even easier, at the end of the article we’ve also included some accommodation recommendations.
THE ROAD TO TULCEA - Admire the landscapes!
If you’re coming from Bucharest, it’s 270 km from the entrance to the A2 “Sun Motorway” to Tulcea via A1 Drajna – Slobozia – Hârșova – Ciucurova, which you can cover in about 3 hours. As soon as you cross the Danube bridge at Hârșova and enter Dobrogea, the landscape changes completely and becomes truly spectacular. Forested hills and colorful plains will accompany you right up to the city limits. Stop whenever you feel the urge to photograph the view!
FIRST DAY IN TULCEA - Get into the rhythm of the city!
Ideally, leave home in the morning so you’ll reach Tulcea around noon for a first fish‑based meal at the restaurants on the Ivan Patzaichin Promenade (you can find them all HERE). Local gastronomy is among the richest and most varied in the country, with fish dishes at the core of the culinary experience.
Then explore the city at a relaxed pace, starting with the Danube Delta Eco‑Tourism Museum, which houses Romania’s largest aquarium. A few steps away you’ll find the Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art (in the former National Bank building) and the Art Museum (in the former Pasha’s Mansion). Not far away is the Avramide House, considered by locals the most beautiful building in the city and now home to splendid art galleries.
Toward day’s end, return to the promenade to catch the sunset by the Ivan Patzaichin Memorial, an architectural ensemble that has quickly become a symbol of the city. Take your time here to watch boats bustling on the Danube and locals strolling at ease.
SECOND DAY IN TULCEA - Explore our county with interest!
We suggest starting with the mainland part of the county and saving the Delta’s splendor for last - after enjoying a specialty coffee at one of the city’s cafés (you can find them all HERE). Don’t rush to get it to go. Better sit and savor it on site!
To help even more, we propose three circular itineraries. Just decide which appeals to you most. At day’s end, before or after dinner, it’s worth taking a short walk in Ciuperca Park, at least to the Rosarium, a superb rose garden spanning over 5,000 m².
The first itinerary follows the oldest branch of the Danube (Sfântu Gheorghe) through Malcoci and Beștepe to Halmyris Fortress, the main historical attraction on the route. Then enjoy another fish lunch in Mahmudia and stroll along the new promenade of this small Tulcea town. On the way back, admire the Agighiol hills. DETAILS
The second itinerary traces the footsteps of the Lipovans, through their spiritual centers at Sarichioi and Jurilovca. You’ll also have the chance to visit Dobrogea’s only surviving medieval fortress, Enisala, as well as the ruins of the ancient citadel Argamum. On the return, stop to admire the Mosque (Geamia) and Panaghia House in Babadag. DETAILS
The third itinerary covers the triangle of monasteries (Celic‑Dere, Saon and Cocoș) and reaches Niculițel, renowned for its vineyards. Continue with brief stops first in Isaccea, then in Măcin, by the mosques. On the way back via the southern roads, be sure to snap a few photos at Iacobdeal, an extremely Instagrammable lake. DETAILS
THIRD DAY IN TULCEA - Patiently discover the Danube Delta!
This day is dedicated solely to the Delta, a natural paradise gifted by God to the people of Tulcea. Here, take time to admire the landscapes, learn about the wonderful birds, attune to the sounds of nature, get to know the places, and connect with locals’ stories. Only by fully immersing yourself in the Danube Delta will you notice every small happening in each corner you pass.
From Tulcea you can explore the Delta on full‑day trips aboard licensed boats led by professional guides, or even by canoe and on SUP boards (you’ll find some recommendations HERE). The key is to be generous with your time—the longer you explore, the better you can sync with the Danube’s rhythm, the local way of life, the spectacular sunrises, the sunsets among the waterlilies, and all the exceptional natural spots.
On the map below you’ll find two specially recommended itineraries, noting that all excursions can be customized for private groups. Avoid from the outset anyone who says “you can see the entire Delta in a single day”, as well as those promoting the “Tulcea – Mila 23 – Letea Forest – Sulina – Tulcea” loop. Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe deserve a full dedicated day - never a rushed visit!
LAST DAY IN TULCEA - Don't rush to come home!
Before heading home, we suggest you do one more thing on this last day: go up to the Monument of Independence. From beside the 22‑meter‑tall obelisk, you’ll enjoy the finest view over Tulcea. You’ll have the entire city, the Danube, the Delta, and the hills of Northern Dobrogea before your eyes—the places you’ve explored during this extended weekend in Tulcea.
We also recommend a short stop at the Fishermen’s Village Museum on the way out of town. Spanning 3 hectares, it features traditional Danube Delta houses, windmills, a stone church, a fishery, and even a fish restaurant—perfect if you’d like to treat yourself once more to the sweet crispness of fried crucian carp or the unique taste of grilled shad.
One last tip: don’t forget to bring something from Tulcea to your loved ones back home - perhaps a simple souvenir, some local products from the city’s fish shops, or a bottle of wine from Tulcea’s wineries. And if you have the patience, you might want to restock on fresh fruit and vegetables at Tulcea’s Market, our central marketplace and the heart of local producers from across the county.
