Few recommendations for a visit in the delta
Because we want you to have the best possible experience in the Danube Delta, in this article we have prepared some specific recommendations:
- We will say it clearly from the start: the delta is worth visiting at any time of the year, not just in the summer months! However, it is good to know that late spring is the best season for a visit to the delta. The birds return from migration, the landscape turns green, and by the end of May, the water lilies are already making their appearance. At the same time, fishing is prohibited, so there is not much crowding in the channels, and it is much quieter.
- The other seasons are also worth experiencing; autumn brings a new migration, and the species you can encounter may be rare and special. Winter is spectacular, especially if the lakes freeze or if the trees are covered with snow, creating a completely different landscape. In February, the curly pelicans are already clothed in their breeding plumage, and this species is one of the most impressive in the delta at this time.
- Letea Forest is a special place where you can admire the Greek vine climbing the surrounding trees. Here, you can also see many species of orchids or very old oaks, creating a unique landscape in Romania made of sand dunes alternating with strips of vegetation. The same landscape can be found in Caraorman Forest (its smaller sister to the south), where you have the chance to meet the “Kneeling Oak,” a natural monument over 700 years old.
- Mila 23 is perhaps the best point from which to explore the Delta; it is quiet, not on the main channels, and its location in the middle of the reserve facilitates transport to almost any other area. Letea is the best-preserved village in the Delta, and if you want to discover the specifics of fishing houses, this is the perfect place to explore. St. George also offers a unique character, especially since the landscape changes, and the union of the Danube with the Black Sea is a must for a complete experience, especially if you want a corner of wild beach. Don’t forget about Old Chilia, another place rich in history and charm.
- Sulina was once a pearl of Romania, an exceptionally important city on the map of Europe. Here, you should spend a few good hours, admiring the historic buildings (the cathedral, churches, lighthouse), visiting the “Old Sulina Exhibition,” strolling along the promenade, or simply spending a few hours relaxing and resting on the beach. It is said that Sulina has the finest sand in the country, and the sea water is perfect for a long bath.
- Always choose a knowledgeable guide and small-speed boats that do not disturb the area. The delta is discovered in peace, at a slower pace and not by navigating at speed, except on the main channels. Perhaps the most unique experience is given by a kayak trip, so don’t miss this opportunity. If this is combined with a night camping, then the experience is complete and unforgettable.
