About

Friday, March 20, 2026, at 5:30 p.m., at the basement of the Avramide House in Tulcea, the opening of the Dobrogea on World Maps exhibition will take place, an event organized by the "Gavrilă Simion" Eco-Museum Research Institute Tulcea in partnership with the Dobrogenius Cultural Association.

The 86 old historical maps, mostly steel or copper engravings from the cartographic collection owned by Ion Luchian, president of the Dobrogenius Association, were made between 1541 and 1938 under the signature of the world's most important cartographers: Johann Baptist Homann, Gerardus Mercator, Rigobert Bonne, Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, Vincenzo Coronelli, Abraham Ortelius, Nicolaus Vischer, Matthaus Seuter, Johannes Sambucus, Sebastian Munster, Johann Joseph Von Reilly, etc.

“The passion for maps is older, but the idea of the collection arose from the desire to create, in the heritage house on Bunavestire Street no. 11 – known as Casa Antippas, a room of maps relevant to the history of Dobrogea. Because the number of maps has increased significantly in recent months, we thought of a way to exhibit them all, and the partnership with ICEM Tulcea, which particularly honors us, was the optimal solution for this,” says Ion Luchian.

“Dobrogea, the common denominator of the collection, explains the status of Limes Orientalis of the Danube for the entire Christian world and the major geopolitical role of this land, integrated into the Ottoman Empire together with the entire Balkan Peninsula and later the “milestone” in a Europe of tensions and contrasts from which, through an effort both political and spiritual, the contemporary United Europe was born,”

Within this singular event, Dobrogea will be present both on the most important maps of the world and in the repertoire of the early music band Trei Parale, well-known for its approach to archaic folklore with Balkan and oriental influences specific to the Dobrogean cultural space.

The exhibition will be part of the visiting circuit of Casa Avramide and can be visited until April 20, 2026, from Tuesday to Sunday, between 9:00 and 17:00 (last entry at 16:30).
